Murray County Fair will include hot air balloon rides and music | News, Sports, Jobs

SLAYTON – The county fair season continues in southwestern Minnesota this week, with the Murray County Fair officially starting today in Slayton. The fair program includes many activities for all ages, as well as food, music and entertainment.

This afternoon only, visitors will have the chance to ride in a hot air balloon. Slayton’s American Legion Post announced that the POW/MIA balloon will be at the fair tonight to raise awareness for US military service members who are still missing. The ball will be located on the football fields in front of West Elementary in Slayton.

Fairground attractions range from inflatables to crafts and games. The Gail Byers Memorial Apple Pie Baking Contest will be judged on Thursday afternoon. Adult events include beer and wine tastings, featuring Schell’s Brewery and Painted Prairie Vineyard.

There’s plenty of action planned for grandstand events at the fair this year. As the fair kicks off today, there will be a tractor pulled by the Great Plains Tractor Pullers. Friday night the action shifts to stock car racing at Murray County Speedway. The races return on Saturday evening, with enduro races.

Musical shows are also on the fairground programme. Johnny Cash tribute band Church of Cash will perform on Thursday night and IV Play will take the stage on Friday night.

There will also be fun events outside the fairgrounds this weekend. A vintage tractor show will be held near the corner of Highway 30 and Highway 59 in Slayton from tonight until Saturday afternoon. That’s when Slayton’s Prairie Days Parade begins. The parade will travel a route that passes through the town center of Slayton, not far from the fairgrounds.

A show by the Rewinder group and fireworks will close the fair on Saturday evening.
