The annual Selma Hot Air Balloon Festival will take off this fall

The October 21-23 event is organized by The Chamber (Schertz-Cibolo-Selma Area). Maggie Titterington, President and CEO of The Chamber, says 2020 is something of an asterisk year, due to the cancellation induced by the COVID-19 pandemic. But after years of experience on the production side of the event, she understands the logistics of getting the hot air balloons off the ground. Hot air balloon rides are tethered to the ground but wind conditions still need to be precise to ensure a safe experience for all. Titterington says winds can’t exceed 7 mph.

Since the event is a multi-day festival, hot air balloon rides may be available on some days and anchored on another. Titterington says the decision is usually a “last minute” decision as organizers want to give guests the best chance of getting into the baskets.

The balloon component of the festival includes highlights such as ADA-accessible balloons and the presence of Glen Moyer of the famous Albuquerque Balloon Festival to host.

While the name of the event centers around the balloons, Titterington says there is a list of activities to enjoy on the grounds of the River City Community Church.

“Balloons are just a very small part of the festival,” she adds.

There will be live music by the Spazmatics and bands from across the state as well as carnival rides, over 20 food trucks, an acrobat show and a GellyBall course.

Although Titterington can’t control the weather, she and the rest of the chamber are happy to come up with a list of fun activities for guests.

“I have a feeling we’re going to have a really good year.”
